Inner City Youth Project

We have a big problem in our inner cities “dads are missing”. Did you know 70% of the inner city youth have no fathers to  model the way, often from the beginning of their lives. We’ve all heard the expression “Like Father, Like Son.” But what happens when there are NO fathers… who does that daughter  or son grow up to be?

Did you know that 43% of youth live now without their father in their home and that fatherless homes account for:

  • 63% of youth suicides
  • 70% or more of adults in prison
  • 71% of high school drop outs and teenage pregnancies
  • 75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers
  • 80% of rapists motivated with displaced anger
  • 85% of youth in prison
  • 90% of runaways and homeless youth

Last week OSA had the opportunity to meet a group of these at risk children in a heavily impacted gang and poverty stricken neighborhood. This neighborhood is 165% below the national poverty level (right here in San Jose, Ca.). These children live in multi-family households; sometimes 3 families deep giving them absolutely no space. These children can’t play outside for fear of getting beat up or recruited into the gang life. We learned that most of these kids only eat one meal a day. One meal a day… in the land of the plenty… this breaks our hearts!

You can make a difference! Your financial support will help us break the cycle of the fatherlessness in our inner city by encouraging and equipping young men and women to be Christ-like servant leaders in their home, church and community.
